The AFA Focus On Defense Golf Tournament

In carrying on with our tradition of supporting our AFA Utah Aerospace Education Foundation, the AFA will host a Charity Golf Tournament following the Symposium on 19 July 2018 at Wolf Creek Golf Course. Breakfast starts at 0730. The tournament will commence with a shotgun start at 0900 and conclude that afternoon with an awards lunch at the golf course.

We need both golfers and sponsors to make this event a success and to help fund the much needed STEM education efforts of the Utah Aerospace Education Foundation. You can sign up for the golf tournament using the Registration button and find sponsorship information and sign-up forms using the Sponsorship button. We hope to see you there either as a player, a sponsor, or both!

The proceeds are used to provide scholarships for senior and junior AFROTC units, support Cyber Patriots and Rube Goldberg competitions, provide monetary awards to primary and secondary teachers of year winners across the state, provide grants to teachers across the state who focus on STEM education, Hill’s Airman Leadership School and our own national treasure, the Hill Aerospace Museum.

Cost: $175 per person (includes salmon BBQ and golf)

Mulligans will be available at checkin for $20 - we'll accept cash, check, or credit card.

2018 Tournament Format

The tournament is a one-day Scramble event. Foursomes may register as a group, or players may register individually and make foursome pairing requests. Players entering with no pairings request will be assigned to foursomes by the golf committee.

The Golf Course
During this year's golf tournament you will have the pleasure of playing the magnificent Wolf Creek Golf Course:

Wolf Creek Golf Course is located in Eden, Utah. Keeping your eye on the ball will be a real challenge at Wolf Creek. Famed for its awe-inspiring sightlines and challenging greens. The Wolf Creek Utah Golf Course meanders across foothills and through oak groves at the head of spectacular Ogden Valley – a true test of your ability to keep your head in the game. As the only Audubon Society-certified golf course in Utah, it’s designed to honor alpine flora and northern Utah fauna, while rewarding golfers with playable links that stay true to the grand traditions of the game.

Rules of Play

Rule #1:
Have Fun!!

Method of Play:
Traditional scramble.

Tees:
Play will be from the white tees for men and the red tees for ladies.

Scramble Rules:

Each member will tee off, the best drive will then be selected by the team and everyone will proceed to hit their second shot from that position.  Each member will hit each succeeding shot playing the best ball as it lies until you hole out; no conceded putts (unless: reference “On Speeding Up Play” 10-stroke maximum).  If you are assigned to a tee group with less than a complete foursome, you may rotate the extra player shot among the group members to ensure you have a selection of 4 best ball shots from which to select the best opportunity to finish play on the hole. This process will be repeated for all 18 holes.

USGA Rules:
USGA rules apply except as modified by local rules attached to score cards. Wolf Creek Golf Course requires spikeless golf shoes.

Mulligan Package:
A mulligan package will be on sale at registration or on site the day of the tourney. The cost of the mulligan package is $20.00, which will pay for 2 Mulligans, Prize Holes and Putting Green competition. During play and upon deciding to use a Mulligan, please declare your intention to your fellow competitors prior to hitting the shot. A Mulligan may be used only to replay your last stroke. The score recorded on your scorecard should be the final score for that hole. The use of Mulligans for tee shots for the special prize holes makes the player ineligible for that designated prize.

Score Cards:
One person will be designated official scorer for each foursome. This person will be identified on the card with an asterisk by his or her name. As soon as you have completed your round, verify and sign your score card and turn it in to a member of the scoring team. The official scores are needed as early as possible so the scoring team can review them and have the scores posted in time for a determination of the winners.

Provisional Balls:
After hitting an errant shot, if you feel it may be out of bounds or lost, and you don’t use a Mulligan, please hit a provisional ball after declaring your intent to do so. This will greatly speed up play.

Rulings:
USGA rules apply to all play except as modified herein. Should any question arise about a ruling, play the original ball as it lies and play a provisional ball as well, record both scores for the hole affected and a ruling will be rendered by the rules committee after the round is completed. For long drive contest, ball must be in your own fairway in order to be eligible for this competition.

On Speeding Up Play:
Keep play moving by making every effort to keep up with the group ahead of you. Remember, ten (10) strokes are the maximum allowed on any one hole. If you have already hit the ball nine (9) times and aren’t holed out, pick up, score ten (10) and go on to the next hole. Thank you!

Tie Breakers:
The individual event ties will be broken by comparing the scores using scorecards at Wolf Creek starting on #1.

GOLF SCRAMBLE RULES – Four Person Scramble Format

  1. A scramble means that all team members tee off on each hole and then decide which tee shot they like the best and mark the spot with a tee or ball marker.
  2. The other team members pick up their balls and place them within one club length (no closer to the hole) of the marked spot. Each team member hits their next shot from the chosen spot.
  3. This procedure is followed on every shot for the remainder of the hole, including putts. The ball should be marked on the putting green.
  4. Putts need to be placed within 3 inches of the marked spot (no closer to the hole). The first ball to go in the hole is counted for the team score.
  5. You may lift, clean and place your ball within one club length on the selected shot; however, you may not move your ball out of a hazard (including bunkers), out of the rough, from the fairway or rough to the apron or from the apron to the green.
  6. Men tee off from the white tees and women from the red tees.
  7. Please turn scorecards in to the Tournament Director. Prizes will be given at the end of the tournament.

GOLF ETIQUETTE:

  1. Please rake all marks made in sand bunkers. Please leave the rakes in the bunkers.
  2. Leave the putting green as soon as you have holed out.
  3. Do not play until the players in front of you are out of range.
  4. Please observe all local course rules.
  5. Enjoy the day!

CONTESTS:

Closest to the Pin: If your tee shot is on the green and closest to the Pin/Hole, write your name on the marker card and place the marker in the ground on the spot where your ball came to rest. Once the marker has been placed in the ground, it should stay there until someone else hits a closer shot. Use the flagstick or tape as a measuring rod if it is a close call. Then, that person should repeat the procedure of writing their name on the card below the other name(s) and place the marker at the spot. “CTP” holes are 4, 6, 8 and 13.

Hole in One:  Hole in one sponsored by Kenley Ford is hole number 16.

Note: Due to insurance limitations, golf pros are not eligible for hole-in-one contests.

Longest Drive: If your drive is in the fairway and the longest, write your name on the marker card and place the marker in the ground on the spot where your ball lays. Once the marker has been placed in the ground, it should stay there until someone else makes a longer drive. Then, that person should repeat the procedure of writing their name on the card below the other name(s) and place the marker at the spot. Longest Drives hole is 17.
